THE SMOKING GUN: At the turn of the 20th century, the country's leading crusader against cigrarettes was a prickly, self-righteous zealot who declared smoking a hazard to human health and morals. Now, 100 years after Lucy Page Gaston nearly achieved a ban on cigarettes in Illinois, a new state law prohibits smokng in restaurants, bars, and public buildings – adding a fitting epilogue to her nearly forgotten story.
